Transportation

Getting around in Daejeon with public transit is easy, reliable and safe. It’s a good idea to get a transit card or cell-phone dangle and get it charged up with money.

City Buses

The City recently produced a map for English speakers which is available in paper form throughout the city. A pdf version is also available here or from the Daejeon Metropolitan City website.

Buses currently cost 1,000 for the yellow “stand-up” buses, and 1,500 for the green “Sit-down” buses. Transfers are currently free or the difference in fare (single transfer only) provided you have a transit card. You may also use this card to transfer to and from the subway.

Subway

The subway is a single, 22-stop line that runs from the southeast area of the city (Panam-dong) to the northwest area (Noeun-dong, Banseok-dong) while making stops at many major locations in between. Tokens are 1,000 or the transit card is also useful for the subways. Transfers between the subway and bus are possible with the transit card.

The route is best seen on the city’s bus map linked to above. It is shown in red on the map, and although it appears partially incomplete it is in fact open from end to end.

From the Chosunilbo on the day of the opening:

Trains will run at average speeds of 35 km/h with a top speed of 80 km/h at five-minute intervals during rush hours and every 8-12 minutes for the rest of the day, starting at 5:30 a.m. There will be some 248 trains a day until midnight.

I’ve noticed that there are bikes at the subway stations and I’ve heard that they are free to use. Are they free? Are there any time limits or usage restrictions? How do you actually get the bikes?
