Movies

There are many places to go see movies in town, from a tiny art cinema to small mom and pop theaters to large cineplexes. Finding what’s playing, however, is a little more difficult unless you speak some Korean. Korea Listings has disappeared and until someone wants to step up and do it, CineCine is the best place to check it out. Their listings are complete and accurate. You can also check out what’s planned for release (Korean, but click through on the pictures to get the original name on any foreign-language/Hollywood films)

Here are the theaters around the city:

  • Star 6 [Galleria Time World]

Star 6 Time World is located in Dunsan-Dong at the Galleria-Time World Building on the 7 and 8th floors.

It is Subway exit 112 and take the E-MART store exit and walk past it straight for about 5-10 minutes until you see Galleria-Time World.

Bus: 104 106 116 211 216 301 315 318 604  605  706 911

It is located in Gajang-Dong at the Lotte Department Store on the 10th floor.

It is Subway stop 109 (Yongmun) and take the Lotte Department store exit #4

  • Say CGV [Say Two Department Store]

It is loacated in Oryu-Dong at the Say Department Store on the 6 and 7th floors. Koreans will tell you this is the best theater in the city.

Nearest Subway Stop: Seodaejeon Naegeori

Daejeon Art Cinema moved downtown to a location near the Daejeon Train Station. It’s now located on the East side of the street (looking at the train station, that’s the right side) next to the Daehoon bookstore. It’s rather hidden up a narrow stairwell on the second floor, but the movie posters are on the wall next to the stairwell entrance. Times and shows are displayed on the ground level.

The closest subway stop is Daejeon Station, and take Exit 2. You can see a satellite map location on our Daejeon Google Map.

Bus: 1  2  62  101  103   107  201  202  311  313  314  317  511  512  514  603  605  606  607  611  613  614  615  616  701  711  802

It is located in Manyeon-Dong in the Stargate building on the 12 and 13th floors. On Subway station 112 and take the exit #3 and walk straight to the crosswalk, then turn left and its 400 meters on the right hand side. Its directly across from the Cross-Country Bus Ticket Office.

Ok…I want to ask if there is a movie theater that provide English subtitle for the Chinese and Korean movies? also if there is a theater that has English language website because its hard for me to go to the movies every time to check for new movies.

The short answer for both is no. There is a theatre in Seoul which was doing a trial run of subtitling on one major Korean release, but I have no idea if that’s still running. Perhaps Mike knows.

As for finding what’s playing, you need to be able to read Korean, but this link to CineCine’s list of Daejeon shows is mostly accurate. There have been errors in it from time to time, but on the whole it’s pretty good.

Hope that helps.

Daejeon Academy (across from Daejeon Station) is pretty easy to navigate.

http://www.mcv.co.kr/

By double clicking the word “Movies” at the top of the website, you are taken to a page that shows the one sheets (pictures) of each movie on the bill and the current day’s play times.

By double clicking on the word “Ticketing” to the left of “Movies”, you are taken to a page that shows what theater the movies are in and the current day’s play times. You can also find a drop down “date” bar that allows you to see at what times the movies will play on future dates.

If you go early, you will miss the rush and usually get a slight discount on ticket prices.

To answer earlier question, all I have heard is a test program at the cgv at Yongsan station. I will check up on it in a few weeks when I go to see Speed Racer at the Imax.

There’s also a Cinus theater in Rodeo Town in Dunsan-dong, between subway stops 110 and 111.

Also, Daejeon What’s On has a good listing of various shows/performances going on in the city.

You can get listings from http://www.cinecine.or.kr translated into English in one of two ways: 1) Google Chrome or 2) Google translator:

First, and useful for *automatically* translating text (does not work within graphics; e.g. pictures, flash design, etc.) from any Korean Websites you use. Google’s Chrome web browser has their online translator built into their browser and will translate the movie names for English titles and Korean titles quite well.

Second, try this link: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http://www.cinecine.co.kr/playing_info.asp%3Fstate%3D4&sl=ko&tl=en

Both services will work quite, and equally, well. Chrome will allow you many other translation opportunities, and is generally considered much better and safer then Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, so if you use that you should definitely consider upgrading.

I have noticed two things: When translating Daejeon (대전) from within the name of a theater it will translate to “War” with the exception of the art cinema as they translate it as Daejeon, I presume due to the location of the name. Also, the theater # is translated as “tube” rather than theater. But the movie titles seem to be excellent translations :) .
