Café de Oven Story

There’s a new café in town but it’s not your run of the mill java stop. Café de Oven Story, located above Italian restaurant Flying Pan in Eun-haeng dong, offers caffeine and sugar junkies an assortment of cafes, teas, and waffles in a quiet, dimly lit space. However, being the newest member of the Sung Sim Dang culinary dynasty, its menu also includes drip coffee, organic sandwiches, and ale, all of which you can enjoy while using their wireless internet service or checking out their library of English cooking and baking books. And if that weren’t enough, the café also houses a small knick-knack shop, a ‘used corner’ where you can donate goods to charity, and a unique loft space that customers can book for intimate get-togethers.

The icing on this place, though, is the fully equipped teaching kitchen set up for cooking and baking classes. Anyone can sign up for a 4 week course that meets on Fridays or special one-time classes that meet on Saturdays or alternating Sundays (11am or 4pm) for groups of 3-6 people.* The cooking classes focus on Italian and French dishes including pastas, salads, sauces, and even teach students how to make their own ricotta cheese! Aspiring bakers can learn how to make a variety of breads and sweets from cheesecakes to scones to cookies.Or walk over to Sung Sim Dang bakery, pick up a favourite baked good and say, “I want to learn how to make this” The prices are a bit steep – 50,000 won per class including all ingredients and drinks but for special occasions such as birthdays, going away dinners, or ever elusive contract renewals, sipping wine while enjoying the salate of your labour may be a nice alternative to the usual Daejeon fare.

For more information visit the Café de Oven Story website or call Sole Lim, the English speaking cooking instructor: 010-7554-4114.

* Cooking classes can be taught in English but for baking classes groups will have to bring a translator.
