100 things to Do or See in Korea

by Kim Hogg on May 24, 2008

Rob Mcgovern of the Korea Herald has just contacted me and is looking for suggestions for his upcoming article on 100 things to see or do in Korea. It’s a great idea, and I hope you’ll add your two cents to the article. Here’s an excerpt from his email:

I am compiling info for an article in the Korea Herald about things to do in Korea, a kind of list of must sees. The list will comprise 100 things (not necessarily the top 100 just 100 things visitors and residents alike should try at least once) and I wondered if you… would like to contribute. You can do it personally or you can open it to the Daejeon community.

I welcome any suggestion from the tiny, esoteric experience of a single foreigner to the grand must sees of the city and area. The list is aiming to be a combination of the guidebook attractions as well as the more unique Korea experiences.

Your input will be greatly appreciated but the is issue is relatively time sensitive so the sooner the better!

Please add your ideas to the comments and I’ll make sure Rob gets to see them.

Stay in a Hanok hotel in Jeonju’s Hanok village. It’s great in winter with the ondol heat keeping you warm. They also serve a full Korean breakfast that keeps you going until lunch without any problem! I’ve stayed at two different hotels, and both times it has been a great experience.

have to second the gwacheon horse race park. great on a sunny day. off the coast of mokpo there are about a gazillion islands all of which are relatively barren before august. jirisan is kickass. roasted duck (not dog) is often overlooked and there are some great duck restaurants on palgongsan in daegu. drunken swings in batting cages are cool. daehakno in seoul is a happening place, maybe see a play there. buy/rent a scooter and drive like a king. nam/dongdaemun though a bit obvious. beltloop wrasslin on the beach is fun. geoje do is a bit out of the way and interesting (cant remember the city name..tongyoung? ) yeosu has some nice scenery. dalmaji in busan is nice for short nature walks in the city. ride the subway naked. haebangchon (seoul) rock fest is cool. they just had the second annual this weekend and i hope it keeps going. actually, haebangchon is like a little foreigner mecca not many know about. more mellow than itaewon. gwangali beach area in busan is nice. youngdeok (near pohang) crab festival in april is great and filled with cheap tasty snow crap. visit a temple for buddha’s rebirthday at night and look at all the lanterns. learn a korean drinking game like gyoungma game (horserace game) or ddalki ddalki or baskin robbins 31 or pabo game…LEARN TO PLAY GOSTOP fer feck’s sake!!! go for a drive on small country back roads anywhere in korea from mid march to may. the lumenarie display in seoul during the christmas holiday season is pretty impressive. rent a minbak in hahoe mauel (하회마을) and see the mask shows. put money in a pig’s head. that’s it.
