Ice Cream in January, Hot Soup in Summer

by Kim Hogg on May 18, 2008

This one showed up in the forums today:

Does anybody know of any on-line Q&A web-sites or forums for general questions about Korean Culture or Language differences?

Since I don’t know any other sites, I do have a question.

I was recently with a friend of mine at a restaurant, and when she took the first sip of her kimchi jjigae she said Si-won-hey (시원해), which I learned means “cool”…. but when I tried, my tongue got burned.

I don’t speak enough Korean to really understand how she explained it. Can somebody help me out?

I offered an answer, but feel free to weigh in with your own!

haha. nice Q really ..

i used to be confused by that Si-won-hey Q a lot `cause i love lammin here( instant noodle) so much…

my korean friends told me the reason that they think it s cool is that when you eat something like kimchi jjigae, which usually we think it s definitely HOT to hell, you will be sweaty… and after you getting sweaty, the next thing you feel will be “cool”…. ( when sweat vapouring )

hope this can help…
