Representin’ Daejeon

by Kim Hogg on April 19, 2008

Seoul Podcast LogoIs there life outside of Seoul? That was the topic of this past week’s Seoul Podcast (Episode 3), hosted by ZenKimchi’s Joe MacPherson and Jennifer of Seoul Survivors, where I had the honour of being a guest with Busan Mike (Moriarty).

Head over to the Seoul Podcast website and listen to what’s going on, or better yet- subscribe to the podcast and get every delicious morsel (iTunes).

It was my first time doing one of these things, and I had a lot of fun doing it. Let me know- did I represent the Daejeon you know? Did I miss something? What would you tell the world about life outside of Seoul?

Kim, how long is this thing? It’s been over an hour and ten minutes, and what happened to Busan Mike? I haven’t heard him in like, forever now.

You have excellent battery life though, or were you on a land line?

BTW, I went on a ride Southwest to Bangdong Reservoir today. It is full and the water is very clear, quite the opposite of my ride Northeast to the damn last weekend. However, once the wind picked up in the afternoon, the pollen was worse than yellow dust though.

It was so beautiful though, I’m heading back tomorrow morning before the wind kicks up the pollen again. Anyone interested in a leisurely 3 hour ride (longer if you like hiking and exploring the farming communities) out to the unspoiled country is more than welcome to come along or check it out on your own if you have the time.

I’d like to leave between 9am – 12pm. Let me know if you’d like to meet up with a message here, or contact me at jawick@hotmail.com

Enjoy the quick spring. Summer is hot (yay! for me) and filled with annoying mosquitoes and gnats.

Haha- It’s pretty long. Probably an hour and a half. I probably should have put a warning in there. We did the interview on Skype, so battery life was a non-issue. Busan Mike wasn’t a big talker, but he was nice.

Also, John- if you’re interested in riding with a group of Koreans to get some kalguksu downtown we’re leaving from the big Korean-style gate behind the Arts Center at 12:30. You can give me a call: 019-463-7262 if you like. It might be quite a long trip for you, though, just to go back downtown for something to eat.

Anyhow. Thanks for listening and for the comment!

Yeah, I heard Mike chime in at the end. I thought he was long gone and had forgotten what he sounded like by then.

Well, I pretty much rode my limit today, out to the dam (where I played in the dirt with my plants for four hours) and then down to the reservoir, and my body only has a short ride left in it for tomorrow. I left at 5am and it wasn’t bad at first, but the sun and pollen really hit me hard late in the afternoon. Especially, since I haven’t had much sun since last October, or September.

There is a lot of construction going on in that new section of town down towards the Lotte supermarket.

One of the shopkeepers at the reservoir wants me out there fishing. Maybe tomorrow I’ll rent a pole and the works and give it a whirl. He gave me a good deal–20,000 won with tackle, bait, snacks, and drinks. Must be because I always patronize his shop everytime I go out there; it also helps that his mom likes me. Very nice people.

Hey John,

I’d be interested in hearing more about fishing expeditions (any kind of expeditions, really).

Drop me a line at ccmontgom AT ratpunk.com, if you feel so inclined….

Haven’t listened to the podcast yet as my attention span for just listening to radios is kinda short and it’s hard to listen while reading technical papers. :D I think I’ll have to break it up to tiny pieces and or do the listening on one of my rides.

I think I haven’t been to the Bangdong Reservoir as well. Maybe I should give it a go one of these days. Have been down with hay fever the past weekend, though. Sucks as it’s such a good time to cycle. Damn flowers and their dastardly pollen. ;)
