Face Shop: Kimchi’s a Cash Crop

by Kim Hogg on April 1, 2008

The Face Shop, Korean purveyor of natural-based beauty products, has announced it is set to launch a line of kimchi-based care products including face wash and pack, shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

Yu Bap-ho, Director of New Product Development at The Face Shop, expressed his confidence in the new product line and its scientific superiority:

As you know, kimchi contains antioxidants and lactic acid, which is very good for clearing the skin. We extracted the lactic acid from the kimchi and it is a major ingredient in our patented pack and face wash. It is good for preventing wrinkles and acne.

Of course, my first question is what this product line is going to smell like, but I’m sure they’ve worked that out. I mean, AIDS, SARS, bird flu and wrinkles? I guess Health was right when they called it one of the healthiest foods on the planet.

In a similar vein, the Chosun Ilbo has an article on using cheonggukjang for medical and cosmetic purposes:

The traditional dish cheonggukjang is gaining popularity with new cosmetic and medical uses. Three senior doctors — Dr. Bae Sun-ryang from the ophthalmology department at Taejon St. Mary’s Hospital, Dr. Kim Chul-joong of Chungnam National University’s Veterinary College, and Dr. Poo Ha-ryoung, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology — report that poly-gamma-glutamic acid (PGA), a major ingredient of mucous materials in the dish, was effective in treating xerophthalmia and corneal wound in animal tests.
